Q. Who needs to be fingerprinted?
A. All volunteers aged 18 years or older, who will be working as volunteers for Reading to Children or the Homework Center.
Q. What do I need to do to have them fingerprinted?
A. Send a copy of the volunteer application to the volunteer services and let them know that this volunteer needs fingerprinting. They will take care of the appointments and paperwork in conjunction with personnel.
Q. What is the minimum age to become a volunteer at the San Jose Public Library?
A. 15 years old for a library volunteer and 13 years old for the TeensReach program.
Q. What are the Teen Reach volunteers?
A. TeensRreach is the teen council for the San José Public Library. It provides a key way for young adult to build their leadership skills by developing and participating in library activities and as library advisors and advocates. Teens Reach members have participated in a lot of activities and programs.
Q. How long is the training for RTC?
A. It consists of 2 training sessions of two hours each.
Q. What is the age requirement to volunteer for RTC?
A. 15 years or older.
Q. Can we allow people to volunteer without going through the process of filling out an application?
A. No. Every volunteer has to have an application on file.
Q. Do the community service volunteers (Junior High and High school student doing their required volunteer hours) have to attend the Volunteer services’ training at King Library?
A. No. They are an exception. Only the volunteers that commit to a period of 6 months have to attend.
Q. If a teenager wants to become a RTC volunteer, does he/she need to have fingerprints?
A. Only if she/he is over 18 years old
Q. How often is the training given by the Volunteer Services?
A. So far, there has been no consistency regarding the frequency of the volunteer trainings. There are several facts: number of applicants, availability of facilities, and staff support to the Volunteer Coordinator (more than one person is needed), Call Volunteer Coordinator to check on date.
Q. Can I reject a volunteer applicant?
A. Yes. You are in your right to accept or not a volunteer applicant if you believe he/she is not a good match for the job, or if you have too many volunteers. Volunteers can be referred to others opportunities in the city or elsewhere.
Q. Can I let go a volunteer?
A. Yes. If a specific volunteer is not doing what is requested of him/her or he/she needs more supervision than what the staff can provide, and or his/her behavior and actions are interfering with the work flow and consequently with the library services. Once you talk to the volunteer about his/her performance and there is no improvement, it is recommended that you let that person go. Feel free to contact the Volunteer Coordinator for help.
